Tips for making brushes last longer

The brushes introduced here are all of traditional design and have been developed over centuries of usage and experience of the Japanese climate. They are designed to best suit the traditional crafts of Japanese painters, screen craftsman, dye artists and conservators working in the Japanese climate. Proper maintenance is necessary as brush performance may vary in climates that are greatly different from Japan`s relatively moist, temperate climate.

When using a new brush for the first time, or when the brush is completely dried, soak the entire brush in water for at least 10 to 20 minutes. This is needed in order to ensure proper bonding between the brush base and handle. In very dry climates, soak longer until the brush is completely moist.

Only organic material, such as animal hair and plant fibres, are used as brush material. Brushes must thus be stored in cool, well-ventilated places to prevent decomposition, and to ensure best quality.

After use, wash the brush thoroughly, remove excess moisture, and dry naturally in a cool, ventilated space.

Do not store brushes in plastic over prolonged periods. Avoid storage in excess heat. Never store brushes in automobiles, near heaters, or in direct sunlight.

Brush Characteristics and Names of Brush Parts

Brush Hair

Brush sizes are expressed in terms of brush widths. Brush materials are either animal hair, including sheep, horse and weasel hair; or plant fibres such as hemp fibre. Brush bases are treated with varnish for bonding and waterproofing.

Brush Handle

Select materials such as seasoned Japanese cypress and bamboo are used for brush handles. Traditionally wooden brush handles are made by a technique called war-ita, or split -board, where a single wood piece is carefully split on one end. Appropriate size and quality material are necessary to make this delicate technique possible. In recent years such materials are becoming harder to come by. As an alternative, two thin board slices are bonded together instead of spitting a single piece. These brushes are manufactured with split-board handles as long as proper materials are available.

Binding

Traditionally silk threads are used for binding. Stainless steel wires are sometimes used to increase durability. There is no difference in actual brush quality or performance. Use steel-bound brushes for greater frequency uses.
