Since 1992 Conservation by Design (CXD) has provided a comprehensive range of high quality conservation storage and display products including furniture, showcases acid-free boxes, museum boards and specialist papers to Museums, Galleries, Libraries and Archives worldwide.
Founder, Stuart Welch, had the vision to establish an ethical company with a positive philosophy dedicated to creative, open-minded design and products that would answer the needs of all areas of cultural preservation. Nearly twenty years on, those values still remain the cornerstone of the CXD business.
Holder of the Royal Warrant by appointment to Her Majesty the Queen, CXD’s passion is conservation and its reputation for quality and expertise has been built on an enthusiasm to understand and satisfy the needs of a wide variety of clients. The company’s commitment to craftsmanship and tradition is matched by an advanced product development programme to ensure that it continues to lead the market through innovation.
In 2007 CXD was acquired by Arqadia, the UK’s leading supplier of mouldings and mountboard to the art and framing market. This move provided the support, investment and resources needed to help develop the company, improve its customer service and explore some exciting new product opportunities.
The website features some of the huge range of products CXD offers – from conservation papers and storage products to equipment, furniture and museum grade display cases. It also showcases the new products available.
At its factories in Bedford, CXD designs and manufactures the world’s largest range of acid-free archival storage boxes under the CXD Timecare® brand. The range of papers and boards includes everything from the finest Japanese and European handmade papers and high quality museum mounting boards to storage and repair papers. To complement the core product range CXD also offer numerous sundry items including adhesives, tapes and small tools.
CXD have been involved in the development of oxygen free storage and display products to eliminate oxygen for many difficult preservation problems. Including the eradication of pests, preservation and drying of flood damaged material, document storage or the storage and display of plastics, rubber and geological specimens that are particularly sensitive to oxidation and damage from UV. In the range we supply vacuum packing machines; transparent barrier pouches; barrier films, oxygen scavengers; oxygen indicating tablets and we have recently introduced the CXD KnoOx oxygen monitoring sensors and equipment.
The company also offers an extensive range of specialist conservation equipment - from large mobile, automatic book cleaning machines to the portable Conservac hand held HEPA vacuum cleaner.
In addition, the CXD engineering facility designs and manufactures a wide range of storage furniture including Planorama®, a unique anodised aluminium drawer storage and display system. Each unit is bespoke and hand built to almost any size or configuration. CXD also provide museum grade display cases, for which we have an impressive list of of reference sites.
