archival specifications
Conservation By Design Limited, Europe's Premier Archival boxmakers, are pleased to introduce our new small quantity, custom made box, folder and envelope service SMART BOXES™.
In 1992 Conservation By Design Limited were the first European company to supply boxes individually made on a computer generated ox making machine. These boxes were tailor made to fit a variety of items from the Kew Gardens Parkes Collection of Oriental Paper Objects including umbrellas, hats, books etc. Until now with the exception of a few special requests we have not yet provided this facility. However, with the expansion of our manufacturing facilities, we are now able to offer this as a standard service.
Conservation By Design Limited SMART BOXES™ are designed and produced using the latest computer technology. Previously the designs which provided the best possible storage protection were prohibitively expensive for the one off or small quantity requirements of libraries, Archives and Museums, because their manufacture involved expensive tooling costs. Conservation By Design has overcome this problem by using Smart Technology to construct SMART BOXES, FOLDERS AND ENVELOPES™
SMART BOXES, FOLDERS AND ENVELOPES™ provide the most effective, economic and flexible storage solution for a wide range of cultural objects including: Books, Pamphlets, Manuscripts, Drawings, Maps, Photographs, Negatives, Film and Audio collections.
SMART BOX™ PRODUCTION
To make our SMART BOXES™ we use a Kasemake computer controlled box making machine specified for use with our range of archival folding boxboard and archival papers. Its sturdy construction allows it to cut, crease, and make holes in heavyweight solid laminated archival board, corrugated boards, foams, plastics and many other materials.]
The Kasemake's parametric design programme allows us to make complex individually sized boxes in minutes. This Windows® based software gives us complete control to adapt existing designs or to create new designs to suit specific non standard requirements.
CHOICE OF DESIGN
To construct a SMART BOX™ to your exact requirements select the style of box you would like from our wide range of box , folder and envelope designs and provide us with the dimensions of the box or the object you wish to be stored. Once created, designs are kept on disc and held in our database for your future use. If you cannot find a suitable design we will create a new one for you.
SMART BOX CONSTRUCTION
SMART BOXES™ can be made from Conservation By Design's wide range of archival papers and boxboards. CXD believe that solid laminate board should be the first choice for archive boxes because it offers a level of protection against fire or flood that corrugated board cannot match. This technology can however be used to manufacture boxes, folders and envelopes from other materials such as corrugated board, corrugated plastic, polypropylene and plastazote foam.
We will advise you if it is more economical to manufacture the quantity required using conventional techniques.
LABELLING AND IDENTIFICATION
For easy identification of the box contents a text reference, e.g. the description of the object stored or archive reference number, can be inscribed on the box using a fade resistant ink.
SPECIAL LININGS
For the storage of delicate objects we are able to accurately cut and fit plastazote inserts within SMART BOXES™
